White Light Challenge Rose Bruford’s Lighting Students

White Light offers three bursaries of £1000 each to students who create the best design proposal for a fictional lighting project.

As part of its ongoing support of the next generation of lighting designers, White Light is pleased to announce three new bursaries for students on the Three Year Lighting Design BA Course at Rose Bruford College. This is the only dedicated lighting course currently available in the UK; the bursaries are available to any student entering its third level.

The application procedure for the award has been designed with two aims: to encourage the students to invent a high quality fictional lighting design, but also to let them experience two major elements of the real world of lighting design - the written proposal and the face-to-face 'pitch'

In the first phase of the competition, students are asked to submit a written design proposal to a fictitious client, describing how they would light either a London building, a pop song, a number from a musical or a scene from a play within a fictitious budget of £10,000. The closing date for submissions is September 1st 1998.

Successful applicants will be asked to expand their idea to a full design proposal, which they will then present to a panel of professionals in early December. The panel will include John Simpson and Bryan Raven of White Light, Chris Toulmin of Modelbox, Nigel Morgan of Rose Bruford as well as freelance lighting designer Rick Fisher and production manager Rodger Neate. The three most successful students will each receive a bursary of £1000.

Commenting on the bursaries, John Simpson, White Light’s Managing Director, said "we are delighted to be able to offer financial support to students committed to the art of lighting design, but hope that even those who don’t finally receive the bursaries will feel that our selection procedure forms a useful practical element of their lighting education."
