White Light and The Moving Light Company Light Oliver!

White Light and The Moving Light Company awarded the contract to supply the conventional and automated lighting equipment to the new UK Tour of Oliver!

White Light and The Moving Light Company have been selected to supply the production lighting equipment to Cameron Mackintosh’s new UK Tour of Lionel Bart’s musical Oliver!. The tour will open at the Theatre Royal, Plymouth on August 18th 1998

Selection for the tour sees White Light continue its association with Oliver!. The company supplied the lighting equipment to the London production, which opened at the London Palladium in 1994 and had become the longest running show at that venue by the time it made way for Saturday Night Fever - which also uses a White Light rig - earlier this year.

The London production pre-dated the formation of The Moving Light Company, but they are delighted to have been selected as the automated lighting suppliers to the tour. To maximise the rig’s versatility and reduce focussing time, lighting designer David Hersey has specified a largely automated rig using a range of fixtures from The Moving Light Company’s diverse hire stock. The design includes Martin PAL1200 and MAC500 spotlights, High End StudioColors, Amptown Washlights and DHA Digital Light Curtains. The rig was finalised after lanterns that were new to the designer, in particular the MAC500 and Amptown Washlight, had been put through their paces on the recent Hey Mr Producer! concert.

The automated lanterns will be complemented by Source Four profile spots, PAR cans, 5K tungsten and 4K HMI fresnels, Toccatta Effects Projectors with DHA custom cloud disks in VSFX animation units, Rainbow colour scrollers and four Robert Juliat Korrigan followspots. Following the route established by the current UK tour of Les Miserables the lanterns will be permanently rigged in custom trussing and fed from ETC SmartRack dimmers flown in a service truss. The entire rig will be controlled from an 800-channel Strand 530 lighting console.

Oliver! will be directed by Sam Mendes and designed by Anthony Ward. David Hersey’s associate lighting designer will be Jenny Kagan, with Rob Halliday as lighting programmer, Alistair Grant as production electrician and Ian Moulds as touring chief electrician. David Gregory is the production manager for Cameron Mackintosh Ltd.
