White Light Supply Every Cameron Mackintosh Show... In One Evening

White Light and The Moving Light Company selected as the lighting equipment suppliers for 'Hey Mr Producer', a concert celebrating Cameron Mackintosh’s career in theatre

Hey Mr Producer Curtain Call

White Light and The Moving Light Company have been selected to supply the lighting equipment for Hey Mr Producer, a charity concert celebrating Sir Cameron Mackintosh’s career in the theatre business. There will be two performances of the concert at the Lyceum Theatre in London, the first on Sunday June 7th, and the second on Monday June 8th in the presence of Her Majesty the Queen.

Hey Mr Producer features songs from every show produced by Cameron Mackintosh, from his earliest productions - including My Fair Lady and Side by Side by Sondheim - through to the international smash hits Cats, The Phantom of the Opera, Les Miserables and Miss Saigon. The concert will be performed by a galaxy of stars from the world of musical theatre.

The lighting for the concert is being designed by David Hersey - an unsurprising choice given that he was the original lighting designer for many of the shows being featured! To help him light the huge range of songs in the show, Hersey has specified a largely automated rig: The Moving Light Company will supply 20 Martin MAC500 spotlights, 6 Martin PAL1200s, 4 High End Cyberlight SVs, 18 StudioColors, 6 Trackspots and 12 DHA Digital Light Curtains to the production. These will be supplemented by around 48 PAR cans, 88 ETC Source 4s, 20 1K Fresnels, 15 Cadenza EPs with VSFX Cloud Disks, 16 Dataflash, a 5K Fresnel, 36 scrollers and 8 Morpheus ColorFaders from White Light. The conventional rig will be controlled from the Lyceum’s Strand 530 console, with the automated rig run from a Strand 550.

Hersey’s aim is to use the rig to recreate the mood and feel of the original lighting for the hit shows, while at the same time adding a concert feel and supplying enough light for the television cameras who will be filming the event. He and his team of associate designer Jenny Kagan, moving light programmer Rob Halliday and production electrician Alistair Grant will also be using the show to familiarise themselves with the MAC500, StudioColor and PAL1200 lanterns, which have been selected for the UK tour of Oliver! that starts at the Theatre Royal Plymouth in August. The lighting equipment for this tour is also being supplied by White Light and The Moving Light Company; White Light also supplied the rig for the show’s record-breaking run at the London Palladium.

White Light have enjoyed a successful working relationship with Cameron Mackintosh for many years; they have supplied equipment to productions including Miss Saigon, Martin Guerre, The Fix, Carousel, Five Guys Named Moe and Les Miserables (UK Tour, London production 1997 refit, 10th Anniversary Australian Tour) as well as Oliver!
