Oliver! Goes To Toronto: White Light Go Too!
White Light and The Moving Light Company supply the lighting rig to the Toronto production of Oliver!

When Cameron Mackintosh's new production of Oliver! opened at the London Palladium in 1994, White Light were there supplying the rig. When the production hit the road in 1998 White Light were joined by The Moving Light Company, supplying one of the largest automated lighting rigs ever seen on a British theatrical tour.

Now the Oliver! tour is off to Toronto, to play a season into the year 2000. And White Light and The Moving Light Company are along for the ride!

The decision to stick with the British touring rig was made by the show's production electrician Alistair Grant and production manager David Gregory after seeing the fit-up schedules for Toronto. The lighting rig - which includes ETC Source Fours, Digital Light Curtains, PAL1200s, MAC500s, High End StudioColors, Amptown Washlights and Irideon AR5s all controlled from a Strand 530 console - tours pre-rigged in custom lighting trusses, fed from dimmers and mains distribution located on a 'service truss' flown as part of the scenery. Setting up a new moving light rig in Canada and then installing in the trussing would take too long, and so the pair turned to White Light and asked - would the existing equipment work in Toronto?

After extensive testing at 110V and 60Hz, White Light's Dave Isherwood and Bryan Raven were pleased to announce that yes, it would be possible! The rig will make a brief stop at White Light after the show's UK tour ends in Bradford to have the required modifications carried out to it, and will then set off across the sea to arrive in time for the productions mid-November opening.

"We are delighted to be able to continue our long involvement with this production" comments Bryan Raven, White Light's General Manager. "Though we have supplied rigs to Europe and other parts of the world before, this is the first time we have supplied a complete rig to a production in North America, and the show clearly indicates how the theatre and lighting industries are now truly global industries."

Oliver! is directed by Sam Mendes and designed by Anthony Ward, with lighting by David Hersey and Jenny Kagan. Alistair Grant is the show's production electrician, with Ian Moulds as chief electrician, Chris Dunford as moving light technician and Rob Halliday as lighting programmer. David Gregory is the production manager for Cameron Mackintosh Ltd.
