On December 20th 2002, at the Royal National Theatre's Annual Lighting Lunch, White Light announced the winners of this year's Student Lighting Design Bursaries - the fifth year that the Bursary competition has been held.

As last year, the scheme included two additional bursaries, one supported by lighting equipment manufacturer ETC, and one supported by the estate of Michael Northen.

The three winners were Eleanor Green (currently taking a year out from her BA Theatre Design and Production course at Trinity College), winner of the White Light Bursary for a project for lighting a submarine; Phil Speck (who is studying at Bretton Hall), winner of the ETC Bursary for his lighting proposal for a production of Chekhov's Three Sisters, and Nathan Curry (studying at Middlesex University), who won the Michael Northen Bursary for his lighting proposal for a production of Tristan and Isolde. Each received a cheque for £500. Nathan Curry was judged the outright winner, and will receive an additional prize of a week of working with White Light during which he will visit ETC, a number of west end theatres and other projects on which White Light is working.

As well as receiving their prizes during the Lighting Lunch, the three winners' work was set out for other lighting designers attending the lunch examine. The students have reported very positive feedback from this opportunity, which offered them an ideal chance to make some useful contacts.

"All of the work presented this year was of an exceptional standard," commented White Light's Training Co-Ordinator, Jason Larcombe. "The presentations to our judging panel were delivered in a very professional manner, demonstrating a high degree of skill and an obvious passion for their particular projects."

White Light is looking forward to offering similar opportunities for students during 2003, through the regular training sessions and seminars held at drama schools , with the open-door training policy at the company's Wimbledon base, and through the Bursary Award Scheme, which will return in 2003. Those interested in entering the 2003 competition are invited to visit the bursary page here on the website, or to contact Jason Larcombe by emailing Jason.Larcombe@whitelightgroup.co.uk. The registration deadline for the 2003 competition is 1st August 2003.
