Introducing students to the possibilities of lighting, to the equipment used to realise those possibilities, and to the methods required to work safely with that equipment: those are the aims of the Schools Lighting Masterclass offered by leading entertainment lighting supplier White Light. Now more schools are discovering the Masterclass, perhaps encouraged by White Light's offer of a pair of tickets for the hit musical The Woman in White, which uses lighting equipment from White Light, to teachers from the first five schools to confirm a Masterclass booking! First to confirm with Simon Barrett, White Light's new contact for school lighting projects, was Bedford School and its teacher James Pharaoh. Their Masterclass took place in mid-October; as with all of the Masterclasses, the event was led White Light's Jason Larcombe, who also holds a BA(Hons) in Lighting Design, is Vice-Chairman of the Association of Lighting Designers and has an enormous range of experience gathered on productions of many types. Larcombe was accompanied by a technician from the White Light team and a selection of demonstration equipment supplied free-of-charge by White Light. During the four-hour session, Larcombe covered both the 'art' and 'practicalities' of lighting design as well as encouraging students to experiment hands-on with the equipment. Commenting on the event, James Pharaoh commented "many thanks! I am sure the guys took away something that they will remember and apply to future productions here and outside of the school." The Bedford School Masterclass was followed by one at the Rye Antony School, organised by Alice Evans, who said "the girls found it very informative; they learned to appreciate how detailed lighting can be. The class gave them ideas for future projects. It was very worthwhile." A further seven Lighting Masterclasses are scheduled for the coming academic year. The Masterclasses, which are free to participating schools, are part of White Light's long-established Training Initiative training and education scheme, which is also helping to keep schools up-to-date with the latest lighting technology by supplying a series of 'Switched On' education posters from Selecon and hosting visits from a range of schools and colleges, most recently Middlesex University, at White Light's Wimbledon base. White Light's lighting stencils, included in White Light's popular Resource Packs, have also recently been updated with symbols for some of the latest lighting products.
