What was the Bursary?
The Bursary was established in 1998, offered initially only to students at Rose Bruford, but expanded the following year to anyone aged eighteen or over and studying lighting design in the UK.

What do you have to do?
There were three stages to the competition:

- Firstly, students had to register their interest.

- Secondly, they had to come up with an idea for a design topic and write a 300 word synopsis outlining their concept and explaining why they should be chosen.

If they were selected after stage two, they were invited to move on to Stage 3 of the competition. Here they had to develop their concept into a full lighting design proposal and presentation. They were then asked to present their lighting proposal to a panel of industry professionals who selected the winners.

Topics that have been presented in past years have included:

  • Lighting for a scene from a play
  • Lighting of a musical number
  • Architectural lighting design
  • Themed event/corporate event lighting

However we welcome any new ideas, if you are unsure about your topic just give us a call!

We aimed to make the brief as realistic as possible. Students were given a theoretical lighting budget to hire lighting and related equipment, with our panel of professionals holding the purse strings. They looked for interesting designs which were also feasible within the constraints given above, and for signs that students had shown consideration of the technical, budgetary as well as aesthetic issues of their concepts. They also looked for an interesting presentation that demonstrated students' communication skills.

What Do You Win?
Prizes in the 2002 included bursaries of £500 for each of three winners.
